As Christians our aspiration is to reflect God in everything we do. However, we are constantly falling short as sin and distractions fill our workday. We can also struggle knowing what it means to reflect God in our work.
Here are 5 simple filters inspired from Galatians, Daniel, and Proverbs to help guide our business day and reflect God in our actions:
- My interactions with employees exhibit love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self control.
- My work is characterized by Faithfulness in all my dealings.
- I am always Responsible with my work.
- I conduct the business in a completely Trustworthy way.
- I make time to help those around me whenever it’s possible.
Filter 1 is Galatians 5:22-23. As Christ followers we will be known by the fruit we bear. Our interactions with employees and customers should be fruit filled and reflecting the fruit of the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. “
Filters 2-5 are taken from the life of Daniel. His responsibilities and challenges of running the kingdom would likely make our business schedule and challenges seem elementary in comparison. However, as he conducted the government affairs, he worked in a way that others could find no fault. If this is not an aspirational way to work, I don’t know what is! More on this here.
Daniel 6:4 “Then the other administrators and high officers began searching for some fault in the way Daniel was handling government affairs, but they couldn’t find anything to criticize or condemn. He was faithful, always responsible, and completely trustworthy.”
Filter 5 is pulled from Proverbs 3:28. It is about helping others when we have the ability. If we can help our employees now, we don’t say “check in later and then I’ll help you”. Let’s be characterized as leaders who always make time to help those around us whenever it’s possible.
Proverbs 3:28 “If you can help your neighbor now, don’t say, “Come back tomorrow, and then I’ll help you.”
These filters help point our work to God for his ultimate glory. So that we don’t waste our days building merely a perishable business, but one with imperishable crowns.
